The Breitling Chronomat Reference 769 was introduced in 1941, as the first chronograph designed for mathematicians and scientists. With its innovative inclusion of a slide rule on the dial that allowed you to perform complex equations on your wrist, the Chronomat is a revolutionary first “smartwatch”.

The History:

Breitling was established in 1884, by watchmaker Léon Breitling. His patented chronograph designs quickly gained popularity amongst industrial, military, and scientific markets. Their innovative designs and technology, along with their reputation for reliability and functionality continue to make Breitling a mainstay in the watchmaking world today.

The Watch:

The Breitling Chronomat Reference 769 has a stainless steel 36 mm case with an acrylic crystal. The dial features a circular “Type 42” slide rule around the inner bezel, as well as two chronograph registers at the 6 and 9 o’clock positions, and plunger-style hour and minute hands. Powered by the Venus Calibre 175 manual-wind chronograph movement, the Reference 769 has rectangular pushers on the side of the case and an unsigned crown.

The Details:

This Breitling Chronomat Ref 769 is in good condition. There are some markings on the case, lugs, and case back, which are consistent with the age of this timepiece. This piece bears the “Doric” logo on the dial and has a Doric signed case back and movement. Doric Watch Company was an importer of swiss timepieces, in the early 1940s. The dial features Arabic-style numerals with luminescent material that has developed a dark patina. This timepiece dates to a production period between 1942-1943.
