About This Watch:

This vintage Wittnauer Steel Two-Register Chronograph Ref 3256 has everything you look for in a vintage timepiece.  From the blued chronograph second and sub-dial hands, dauphine-style hour and minute hands that have developed matching patina, and a Landeron Calibre 51 movement, this watch is an excellent representation of the classic mid-century craftsmanship that Wittnauer is synonymous with.

The History:  Founded in 1880 by Albert Wittnauer, the Wittnauer Watch Company  was born out of a desire to create durable high quality timepieces that had all the functionality of the Swiss brands, but at a more affordable price point for the American market.  Run by Albert and his brothers Louis and Emile, the company was moved to New York, with a production plant opened in Puerto Rico shortly after.  Upon the death of all three Wittnauer brothers, their younger sister Martha took over and became the first female CEO of a watch brand in 1915.  Martha led the company for more than 20 years, becoming the first woman elected into the Horological Society of America.  During her leadership, Wittnauer was able to develop a relationship with the US Military, which led to the production of many timepieces and instruments used for aviation.

The Watch:  This Ref 3256 Wittnauer Chronograph features a 35mm steel case with an acrylic crystal.  The sectored dial features a telemeter scale at the outer ring, and two recessed sub-dials at the 3 and 6 o’clock position.  The dauphine-style hour and minute hands are silver with lume while the chronograph second and sub-dial hands are blued. This timepiece is powered by the Landeron Calibre 51 movement.

The Details:  This Ref 3256 Wittnauer Steel Two-Register Chronograph is in very good condition and is recently back from service.  The case appears to be unpolished with sharp case lines still present.  There is wear on the case, case back and lugs consistent with a vintage timepiece and visible in the photographs.  Included with this timepiece is an aftermarket brown suede strap with stainless steel buckle.
