About This Watch:

This vintage 1950s Wittnauer Chronograph has everything you look for in a vintage timepiece.  From the sectored dial with recessed numerals and hour markers, the blued chronograph second and sub-dial hands, and a Venus Calibre 188 movement, this watch is an excellent representation of the classic mid-century craftsmanship that Wittnauer is synonymous with.

The History:  Founded in 1880 by Albert Wittnauer, the Wittnauer Watch Company was born out of a desire to create durable, high-quality timepieces that had all the functionality of the Swiss brands but at a more affordable price point for the American market.  Run by Albert and his brothers Louis and Emile, the company was moved to New York, with a production plant opened in Puerto Rico shortly after.  Upon the death of all three Wittnauer brothers, their younger sister Martha took over and became the first female CEO of a watch brand in 1915.  Martha led the company for more than 20 years, becoming the first woman elected into the Horological Society of America.  During her leadership, Wittnauer was able to develop a relationship with the US Military, which led to the production of many timepieces and instruments used for aviation.

The Watch:  This 1950s Wittnauer Chronograph features a 35mm steel case with an acrylic crystal.  The sectored dial features a telemeter scale at the outer ring and two recessed sub-dials at the 3 and 6 o’clock positions.  The numerals at the 12 and 6 o’clock positions are recessed into the dial, as are the hour markers.  The sword-type hour and minute hands are silver, while the chronograph second and sub-dial hands are blued. This timepiece is powered by the Venus 188 Calibre movement.

The Details:  This 1950s Wittnauer Steel Two-Register Chronograph is in very good condition.  The case appears to be unpolished, with sharp case lines still present.  Wear on the case, case back, and lugs are consistent with a timepiece of this age and is visible in the photographs.
