The Seiko Pogue 6139 was the first automatic chronograph watch brought to market in Japan in 1969.  It was released as the Seiko Speed-Timer but later was referred to as the Pogue due to its use by Colonel William Pogue, an astronaut for NASA, during his time on the Skylab 4 Mission.

The History:

Seiko began its rich history in 1881 when Kintaro Hattori opened a shop repairing and selling watches in central Tokyo.  Eleven years later, he opened a factory called the Seikosha Factory and began building wall clocks and pocket watches.  After an earthquake and fire destroyed the original factory, Hattori reopened with a new vision, which began what we know as Seiko today.  A true pioneer in watchmaking, Seiko developed the first Japanese-made divers watch.

The Watch:

The Seiko Pogue features a 40mm stainless steel c-case shape with a fixed blue and red tachymeter scale bezel and a hardlex crystal.  The yellow dial features a sunburst pattern, a bright yellow sunburst dial, a bi-directional rotating inner bezel ring, a sub-dial at 6 o’clock, and day and date windows at 3 o’clock.  Powered by the self-wound Seiko Caliber 6139 movement, the Pogue features a quick-set day/date feature operated by pushing the crown in.

The Details:

This Seiko Pogue Ref 6139-6002 dates to the production year 1976.  The internal bezel is functioning correctly.  This timepiece includes an aftermarket Uncle Seiko black rubber strap with a stainless steel buckle.
