The Rolex Sea-Dweller was designed with saturation divers in mind. Due to the use of helium in the gas mixture during saturation dives, helium particles would accumulate in the cases of diving watches, during extended periods at depth, which would then escape through the weakest parts of a watch during decompression. Many times, it would escape by popping the Plexiglas crystal off of the watch. Rolex developed the helium escape valve, built into the side of the watch case, to combat this issue, and therefore allow for a safe release of the gas, and continued reliability and durability of the watch.

The History: The Rolex brand needs no introduction. Founded in 1905 by Hans Wilsdorf and his brother-in-law, Alfred Davis, these visionary men set out to do what had not been successfully and reliably done before. Build a timepiece to be worn on the wrist, that was both highly reliable, functional, and durable, as well as stylish. Wilsdorf’s dream was to create a watch that could accompany its owner through all facets of life and withstand any environment. His innovative approach and high standards for quality reshaped the watch industry as a whole. It has made the Rolex name synonymous with quality, innovation, and elegance.

The Watch: The Sea-Dweller Ref 16600 has a 40mm stainless steel case and a sapphire crystal. The Ref 16600 utilizes the Calibre 3135 movement and has a water resistance rating of 4000ft. The gloss black dial has circle and rectangle hour plots with Super-Lumiova lume and white gold surrounds and features a date window at the 3 o'clock position. The hour and minute Mercedes-style hands are also lumed.

The Details: This Rolex Sea-Dweller Ref 16600 is in very good condition, with minimal wear present on the case, lugs and case back. There is some wear on the bracelet clasp, which is consistent with the age of this timepiece and visible in the photographs. This is an A serial number timepiece. This 16600 comes with both outer and inner boxes, serial number stamped chronometer certificate, and hang tag.
