Many timepieces have history closely tied to automotive racing, but perhaps none is more iconic than the Porsche Design Chronograph.  The original piece created in 1972 was the Chronograph 1.  It was the first timepiece to utilize a black PVD coating for the case and bracelet. Designed by the legendary Ferdinand Alexander Porsche, creator of the Porsche 911, the Chronograph 1 was the first product introduced by his company, Porsche Design. In celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Porsche Design brand and in conjunction with the GP Ice Race, organized by Ferdinand Porsche’s nephew in Zell am See Austria, the home of Porsche Design, the Chronograph 1 GP Ice Race Limited Edition was released in a limited run of 50 numbered pieces.

The History:

Founded in 1972 by Ferdinand Alexander Porsche, Porsche Design was born out of a desire to design distinctive products following the Bauhaus philosophy that form follows function. The first product released by Porsche Design was a timepiece known as
the Chronograph I. Designed by Porsche, the Chronograph I was built by Orfina and initially released in 1973.

The Watch:

The Porsche Design Chronograph 1 GP Ice Race Limited Edition features a 40.8mm Titanium case coated with bead-blasted black titanium carbide and
a sapphire crystal.  The black dial features white hour markers, hour and minute hands with SuperLuminova, sub-dials at the 12, 6, and 9 o’clock positions, a red chronograph hand, and day and date windows at the 3 o’clock position.  Powered by a COSC-certified WERK 1.140 Caliber movement, the Chronograph 1 features a 48-hour power reserve and a water resistance rating of 100 meters.
