The iconic Porsche Design Chronograph 1 by Orfina was the first timepiece that utilized a black PVD coating for the case and bracelet. Designed by the legendary Ferdinand Alexander Porsche, creator of the Porsche 911, the Chronograph 1 was the first product introduced by his company, Porsche Design. Its use by Tom Cruise’s character, Lt. Pete “Maverick” Mitchell, in the Top Gun films has made the Porsche Design Chronograph a highly popular timepiece for collectors and movie enthusiasts alike.

  • The History:

Founded in 1972 by Ferdinand Alexander Porsche, son of the legendary automaker, Porsche Design was born out of a desire to design distinctive products following the Bauhaus philosophy, which states that form follows function. The first product released by Porsche Design was a timepiece known as the Chronograph I. Designed by Porsche, the Chronograph I was built by Orfina and initially released in 1973.

  • The Watch:

The Porsche Design Chronograph 1 has a stainless steel, black PVD-coated case with a solid stainless steel case back and a mineral crystal. The dial is matte black, with three sub-registers at the 3, 6, and 9 o’clock positions, tritium lume on the hour markers, and both day and date windows.  A Valjoux 7750 movement powers this timepiece and features the early dial script with Orfina above the day and date windows with the Porsche Design script beneath.

This Porsche Design Chronograph 1 has recently returned from a movement service and dates to an early 1970s production period, between 1972-1975, featuring the Valjoux 7750 movement and the Porsche Design text rather than the logo.  Included with this timepiece is an aftermarket Strap Habit rubber and nylon strap
