Seiko Prospex 1970s Diver's "Captain Willard" Re-Interpretation SPB237, Full Set

The Seiko Prospex 1970 Diver’s “Captain Willard” Re-Interpretation SPB237 is inspired by the early Seiko dive watch, whose nickname comes from the famed character played by Martin Sheen in Apocalypse Now.  The watch was commonly worn by GIs during the Vietnam War, making its presence on screen authentic to the period in which the movie took place.  Subtle details of the SPB237 give this modern timepiece a vintage feel, from its intentionally aged bezel insert, with grainy texture and light coffee-colored bezel markers, to its patina-colored hour markers and hands against the textured grey dial.

The History:

Seiko began its rich history in 1881, when Kintaro Hattori opened a shop repairing and selling watches in central Tokyo.  Eleven years later, he opened a factory called the Seikosha Factory and began building wall clocks and, later, pocket watches.  After an earthquake and fire
destroyed the original factory, Hattori reopened with a new vision, which became the beginning of what we know as Seiko today.  A true pioneer in watchmaking, Seiko developed the first Japanese-made divers’ watch.

The Watch:

The Seiko Prospex 1970s Divers SPB237 features a 42.7mm stainless steel case with a unidirectional rotating bezel and a sapphire crystal.  The textured grey dial features vintage-colored lumed hour markers and hands and a date window at the 3 o’clock position.  Powered by the Caliber 6R35 automatic movement, the SPB237 features a 70-hour power reserve and a water resistance rating of 200 meters.
