Hamilton produced the 17-jewel 980 manual wind movement from 1934 to 1951, which was designed as a high-grade, small collaboration with the E. Howard Boston watch company.  The barrel-shaped movements were typically fit into tank-style cases, such as this 14K White Gold Art Deco style timepiece with diamond hour markers and a sub-seconds dial.

  • The History:

The Hamilton Watch Company was founded in 1892 in Lancaster, PA.  Initially producing pocket watches for use by the railroads, Hamilton was known for accuracy and reliability.  During WWI, Hamilton became a supplier to the U.S. Military, stopping production of consumer timepieces during WWII and solely focusing on providing wristwatches for the Armed Forces.  During the late 50s, they reintroduced themselves to the consumer market with bold case designs, as well as innovative firsts, such as the first electric watch (The Ventura) and the first digital watch (The Pulsar).

  • The Watch:

The Hamilton 14K White Gold Tank features a 21mm x 40mm tank-shaped case, with a snap-on 14K white gold case back and a mineral crystal.  The cream-colored dial features diamond hour markers with diamond-filled Arabic numerals at the 12, 3, and 9 o’clock positions.  There is also a small running seconds sub-dial at the 6 o’clock position.  This timepiece is powered by the Hamilton manual wind 17-jewel 980 movement.

  • The Details:

This timepiece dates to an early 1940s production period.  The dial has developed some patina, and wear is present on the case and crystal, which is consistent with a timepiece of this age.  Included with this timepiece is an aftermarket brown leather strap with a stainless steel
buckle.
